RESULTS.
For the majority of people exhibiting dry eye type symptoms, the main problem is not that the eye is producing insufficient amounts of tears, but rather the eyes' oil glands (Meibomian Glands) begin to malfunction. Due to inflammation, over time these oil glands (located in the eyelids), may produce oil (meibum) that is more of a butter like consistency rather than that of a healthy olive oil. This change in consistency causes symptoms due to mechanical irritation during each blink, enflamed/sensitive tissues due to clogged glands, as well as allowing excess moisture evaporation.

The SteamGoggle works by applying steady moist heat to the eyes while allowing you to blink in order to reduce dry eye symptoms caused by clogged Meibomian Glands. This process allows for heat to directly contact the gland openings at the edge of the lid margin, while producing a continuous massaging effect, whereas any melted/loosened meibum is pumped out of the gland openings. This process can be shown visually by examining the lid margin following treatment with the SteamGoggle as shown below.

Thickened, white oil gland contents are flushed out and can be visible on lid margin following treatment (see images of white residue left on inventor's lid margin following SteamGoggle treatment).

As shown above, the combination of moist heat and a repeating blinking action slowly removes previously solidified oils over the course of the treatment. Over time, the oils can turn from a healthy olive oil consistency to that of a thickened white paste, which can be seen above accumulating on the lid margin. During the treatment, users may also notice a gritty/sand in the eye sensation immediately following a forced blink. This is indicative of the expulsion of gland contents, which may contain solidified oils, skin cells, etc.
Other methods of removing gland contents include gland expression using physical pressure using a finger or an instrument like a Mastota paddle. However, this is undesirable on a consistent basis as it is unknown if consistent application of large forces can cause damage to these delicate tissues . See below for images of visibly clogged glands and solidified meibum following the application of pressure.

Top: Healthy gland structure allows for oil to cover ocular surface following each blink.
Bottom: Gland contents thicken and clog openings, causing additional inflammation.

Clogged gland openings visible on inventor's lid margin. Thickened oil expelled from glands can cause foreign body sensation/irritation as it spreads across ocular surface.

Solidified gland contents can be visualized following the application of physical pressure with Mastrota paddle. The addition of heat may be required to dislodge thickened meibum.

Due to the chronic nature of this condition, a consistent treatment regimen may be required to eliminate and prevent the re-occurrence of symptoms. The application of moist heat and lid hygiene are key in this goal. The SteamGoggle provides a safe and consistent method of successfully removing thickened gland contents, without having to use more invasive/forceful procedures.
