INSTRUCTION GUIDE

This device was primarily designed to help those with dry eye symptoms at least partially caused by MGD (like myself), but this moist heat treatment can be soothing/therapeutic for anyone. For those trying to reduce/resolve dry eye type symptoms, please read the following advice to maximize the chances of success, as it has worked for me and others. Mainly, (1) try and maximize the amount of moist heat you can comfortably handle (everyone is different and overdoing the heat can make symptoms worse as well), (2) while doing some forced blinking exercises during the treatments. Maximizing moist heat absorption by trying to look downwards during treatment and potentially doing 2-3 treatments back-to back (20-30mins total) with some forced blinking should aid in the unclogging of the eyes’ oil glands (note that this may take at least several treatments for the eyes to acclimate to the moist heat). (3) After the treatment, make sure to immediately wash your eyes with some type of mild eye cleanser (i.e. baby shampoo; we supply a cleanser bottle) to remove any stagnant oils that were expelled and any accompanying bacteria. Use the device 1-2 times per day for 2-3 weeks, to evaluate effectiveness. Afterwards, use as needed.

At least for me, after starting to use the device, the improvements for my years long chronic symptoms were so slow that I didn't really notice improvements day to day, but after 2-3 weeks I could begin to tell a noticeable reduction in symptoms. After a little while longer, I can happily say my symptoms faded away to the point where I no longer think about my eyes anymore (although I still use the device occasionally as maintenance).  Learn more about my story here.

Please note that the SteamGoggle differs from other dry eye masks in how it is used. Mainly, the moist heat temperature experienced during a particular treatment can be adjusted in two ways:

1.  Adding water to the plastic lattice will increase treatment temperature.  Performing a treatment with no water in the lattice will give a cooler temperature, while a full lattice will give a warmer temperature.

2. The position of the head will affect the treatment temperature.  Looking straight ahead will give a cooler temperature while looking downward will give a warmer temperature.

Note: Never look upwards or lay head down during treatment to ensure water stays in eyecup.

Keep in mind that the SteamGoggle's higher treatment temperatures may be more effective at unclogging clogged oil glands and therefore reducing irritation.  During treatment, try at least several forced blinks to help accelerate this process.  A temporary gritty sensation after a forced blink may be indicative of the removal of solidified oil gland contents.

Additional Important Information:

  • Treatment must be performed while sitting up with face looking down or straight ahead. Do not look up or lay head down during treatment to ensure heated water is retained in eye cups. Water temperature can reach a maximum of 60°C, which is safe, but may be uncomfortable if spilled onto upper cheek. See our FAQ page for more information regarding device temperatures.

  • If the temperature is uncomfortable, loosen the goggles or try the treatment without adding water to experience a cooler temperature
treatment. It may take several treatments for the eyes to acclimate to the moist heat.

  • Keeping the eyes open may increase the effectiveness of the treatment as blinking (consider trying some forced blinks) may help breakup and remove solidified oil gland contents.
