About

ABOUT

The patented SteamGoggle is an easy to use at home dry eye treatment device that combines moist heat with blinking to alleviate symptoms caused by MGD and Blepharitis.  This concentrated moist heat (of adjustable temperature) combined with the eyes' own blinking motion, serve to more effectively unclog the eyes oil glands and help restore their function.  The device is easy to setup (simply add water to each eyecup and press power button) and clean (place entire goggle under faucet to rinse), while also allowing the user to perform stationary activities such as reading/watching TV during treatment.   Innovative technology including PTC heaters with embedded safety features and a high performance/heat-resistant PESU plastic lens, allows the device to heat up fast and precisely, which allows for a high concentration of steam for each treatment. This sustained high concentration of moist heat (50°-55° celcius-may take some users several treatment sessions for their eyes to acclimate to) allows the device to provide a more effective dry eye treatment compared to other methods.  Use the device anywhere, anytime and for as long as you want with the included portable power bank, with over 15 treatments per charge.

Device Intro/Guide

Interview w/ Dr. Plowman

Dr. EyeGuy Review

In this short video, learn how easy it is to setup/use the device and watch how innovative PTC heater technology safely converts water inside each eyecup into consistent moist heat to aid in unclogging of the eyes' Meibomian glands.

In this product review video, Dr. Neil Guymon (a practicing optometrist and creator of the popular Dr. EyeGuy Youtube channel)  talks about the benefits of moist heat for the treatment of dry eye. He then talks about the unique benefits of the SteamGoggle as compared to other treatment options on the market.

In this video, Dr. Leigh Plowman (optometrist and founder of the Dry Eye Directory) sits down with David Frank, the founder of SteamGoggle to discuss his personal journey with chronic dry eye and what led him to create a device that changed his life--and the lives of others.

Step 1: Add Water to Plastic Lattice in Eyecup

1.  With clean hands, begin by adding water to the plastic lattice grooves (or squares) inside of each eye cup by using the squirt bottle or by pouring water into the eyecup. Note that treatment temperature can be affected by filling more or less grooves with water. Filling them all will give the maximum temperature, while filling none with give the lowest.

Step 2: Remove Excess Water and Turn on Power

2.  Tilt the goggles upside down and lightly tap with finger to remove any excess water. Some water should remain in the plastic grooves. Press the power button and allow the device to pre-heat for 1:30 seconds. Power switch will emit an audible double-beep to notify user that pre-heating has finished.

Step 3: Enjoy Soothing Moist Heat While Reading/Watching TV

3.  Put the goggles loosely over the eyes to begin treatment.  At the end of the 8 minute 30 second treatment time, the power switch will triple-beep and shut off power. If desired, treatment can be extended by restarting power  button and refilling plastic grooves with water if it has evaporated.

TESTIMONIALS

-"Received the device in the middle of a blepharitis infection and chalazion. Used device every day 10 minutes for a week to 10 days. Now that the issue has cleared up, I am using it weekly as maintenance. I really enjoy using the goggles bc they are ultimately effective and the convenience of being able to watch TV or scroll on my phone hands free is a plus."

What is your opinion of the temperature of the device?  "Was hot for the first few seconds but was fine within a minute. It’s been fine since first use."

Any changes in symptoms short term/long term? "Definitely helped short term. My eye style/chalazion was progressively getting worse with the hot compress, but after using the Steamgoggle twice, started seeing a reduction in swelling and irritation. Haven’t had a recurrence since getting the device so long term so far so good"

Would you recommend the device to other dry eye sufferers?  "Yes, definitely. Easier to use than compress and more effective."

Clogged Meibomian Glands

Meibomian glands are oil glands inside the top and bottom eyelids (see images) and research has identified MGD (Meibomian Gland Dysfunction) as being a leading cause of dry eye symptoms.  For people with MGD, the glands become inflamed, which can cause oil secretions to turn from an olive oil consistency to that of butter or thicker.  This in turn clogs the glands and sets off a cycle of irritation, inflammation and possibly infection, that is difficult to treat due to the eye’s sensitive nature. â€‹â€‹â€‹ â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

The SteamGoggle differs from other methods/products, as it combines moist heat with forced blinking to help warm/soften and then massage/remove these solidified gland contents through the gland openings during treatment. Thickened, white oil gland contents are flushed out during treatment and can be visible on lid margin following treatment (see images of white residue left on inventor's lid margin). This is why it is important to wash your eyes with a mild cleanser (i.e. baby shampoo) following treatment to remove any of this dislodged debris (and accompanying bacteria) from the eyes .

Dry Eye/MGD Treatment Advice (1-2-3)

This device was primarily designed to help those with dry eye symptoms at least partially caused by MGD (like myself), but this moist heat treatment can be soothing/therapeutic for anyone. For those trying to reduce/resolve dry eye type symptoms, please read the following advice to maximize the chances of success, as it has worked for me and others. Mainly, (1) try and maximize the amount of moist heat you can comfortably handle (note that everyone is different and overdoing the heat can make symptoms worse as well), (2) while doing some some big forced blinks (every 15-30sec) during the treatments. Maximizing moist heat absorption by trying to look downwards during treatment and potentially doing 2-3 treatments back-to back (20-30mins total) with some forced blinking should aid in the unclogging of the eyes’ oil glands (note that this may take at least several treatments for the eyes to acclimate to the moist heat). (3) After the treatment, make sure to immediately wash your eyes with some type of mild eye cleanser (i.e. baby shampoo; we supply a cleanser bottle) to remove any stagnant oils that were expelled and any accompanying bacteria. Use the device 1-2 times per day for 2-3 weeks, to evaluate effectiveness. Afterwards, use as needed. Please see "Instructions for Use" guide below for more details and always feel free to contact us with any questions.

At least for me, after starting to use the device, the improvements for my years long chronic symptoms were so slow that I didn't really notice improvements day to day, but after 2-3 weeks I could begin to tell a noticeable reduction in symptoms. After a little while longer, I can happily say my symptoms faded away to the point where I no longer think about my eyes anymore (although I still use the device occasionally as maintenance). I hope that this device (which finally helped me after so many years of dead ends) can help you in a similar manner.  Click this link to read more about my dry eye story.
